Vet Shares 4 Ways to Keep Cats Cool in Heatwave

A veterinarian has shared four straightforward methods to help cat owners keep their pets cool during the UK heatwave, offering tips that can make felines feel lighter, more comfortable, and relaxed.

Expert Advice for Feline Comfort

As temperatures continue to rise across the United Kingdom, pet owners are frequently reminded about the dangers heatwaves pose to dogs. However, one vet has highlighted that cats are often overlooked in such discussions. According to the expert, cats are generally more adept at managing hot weather compared to dogs, but owners can still take steps to enhance their comfort.

The vet, known as @cat_the_vet on TikTok, shared four simple recommendations to help keep cats cool and relaxed during the heatwave.

Invest in a Cooling Mat

One of the top suggestions is purchasing a cooling mat. Cats spend most of their time sleeping and lounging, especially in hot weather. A cool surface to lie on can make a significant difference during warmer days, even if some cats choose to ignore it entirely.

Flavoured Ice Cubes

Another trick involves making flavoured ice cubes to encourage increased water intake. Instead of plain water, the vet recommends freezing the spring water from a tin of tuna—ensuring it is not salty brine or oil—and dropping the cubes into the cat’s water bowl throughout the day. This keeps the water cool and makes it more appealing for fussy cats.

Frozen Treats

The expert also suggests offering frozen treats during hot weather. Her own cats enjoy frozen lickable cat treats as a way to cool down.

Regular Brushing for Long-Haired Cats

For long-haired cats, regular brushing can significantly help in warmer temperatures by removing loose and dead fur trapped in thick coats. The vet explains this can help cats feel lighter and far more comfortable when temperatures rise.

Fan Placement

Finally, she recommends placing a fan near where cats usually nap, allowing them to sleep in a cool breeze throughout the day.

Cats Are Self-Regulating

Despite these tips, the expert stresses that cats are generally very good at regulating themselves in hot weather. Unlike dogs, it is quite unusual for cats to suffer from heatstroke because they naturally slow down, rest more, and seek cooler spaces on their own.

Owner Reactions

The video sparked discussion among cat owners, many of whom admitted their pets had ignored expensive cooling products. One person said: “I got them a cooling mat, do they use it? Nah, the bath is better.” Another owner revealed their cat had developed a new heatwave habit: “Ever since the heat rose my cat has become accustomed to screaming until I turn on the tap for her,” they joked. Meanwhile, another viewer admitted their cat rejected both a cooling mat and a water fountain but happily settled for a cold wet flannel instead.

As temperatures continue climbing this summer, the vet says small changes can help keep cats more comfortable—even if many of them still insist on doing things entirely their own way.
