Rangers Fan Told He Wouldn't See 30 Loses 17 Stone

John MacDonald, a devoted Rangers fan, was given a stark warning by his doctor: if he didn't lose weight, he wouldn't live to see his 30th birthday. At nearly 28 stone, he faced prediabetes, sleep apnoea, and high blood pressure. That warning became the catalyst for a remarkable transformation.

A Terrifying Start

John joined Slimming World in 2023, but his first weigh-in nearly ended in tragedy. He collapsed, fearing a heart attack, and was rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The panic attack, fueled by anxiety and minimal eating beforehand, was a turning point. Despite the scare, he returned the following week, determined to change his life.

Gradual Changes, Big Results

With support from consultant Carrina McGovern and his group in Easterhouse, Glasgow, John adopted a healthier lifestyle. He swapped sugary drinks for low-calorie alternatives, learned to cook from scratch, and gradually increased his activity. Over 17 months, he lost 16 stone 12 pounds, dropping from a 52-inch waist to 31 inches.

Health and Happiness

John's health improved dramatically: his sleep apnoea disappeared, his breathing got better, and he gained energy. He now walks everywhere and enjoys cooking meals like Cajun chicken pasta. In June, he celebrated his 30th birthday at his Slimming World group, a milestone he once thought impossible.

Inspiring Others

John's story, featured in Slimming World Magazine, aims to inspire men to prioritize their health. Consultant Carrina McGovern praised his determination, while Laura Holloway from Slimming World's nutrition team highlighted the benefits of group support. John urges others: "If you're thinking about it, just take that first step. It could change your life like it changed mine."
