Mindy Kaling is facing scrutiny over her dramatic weight loss, with fans demanding the actress admit to using GLP-1 medication after debuting her noticeably slimmer frame. The 46-year-old Office star has shed around 40 pounds in recent years, recently revealing she dropped several dress sizes for health reasons as she hopes to live longer for her three children.
Health Over Vanity
When I was younger, I would want to lose weight because of vanity reasons, she told Bustle. Now I want to lose weight or have lost weight because I want to stave off things like diabetes. Kaling, who spent years openly joking about being chubby both on and off screen, also acknowledged why some longtime fans have struggled with her transformation.
It's sometimes no fun when one of your favorite actors loses weight, she admitted to the outlet. You have an idea of what they were like when you grew attached to them, and it made them endear themselves to you.
Social Media Speculation
But after the actress recently stepped out flaunting an ultra-tiny waist, social media users quickly reignited speculation that weight loss medication like Ozempic may have played a role, with critics accusing the star of being less than transparent about her slimdown. One Reddit user wrote, I don't understand why people feel shame about taking a GLP1. It's a drug for a chronic condition, the same way I have to take blood pressure medication. Another chimed in: I don't think anyone is required to publicly address their weight loss methods, but it just felt dishonest.
Yet another weighed in, posting: She comes across as insincere here and I think that's more the issue. And one more said: No one would care if she was just honest that she used GLP-1s. The scrutiny is because she's dishonest. Others admitted they found her transformation difficult to relate to, particularly given Kaling's longtime openness about struggling with her weight.
It's no fun when you try everything to lose weight and then a celebrity who has also struggled all of a sudden gets super skinny and won't admit how she did it, another commenter wrote. It's so frustrating and really negatively affects people and I can't support her until she is more honest. The Daily Mail has reached out to Kaling's representatives for comment.
Past Reflections on Weight
Kaling has previously spoken candidly about her complicated relationship with weight and body image over the years. Last year, the comedienne admitted she wished she had spent less time obsessing over the number on the scale when she was younger, while reflecting on the wellness advice she would give her younger self. During an interview with Shop Today shared on TikTok, the actress was asked: What is the one piece of wellness advice that you'd give to your younger self? Without hesitation, Kaling replied: Don't worry about the scale.
Back in 2022, the Mindy Project alum credited a shift in mentality, along with a consistent fitness routine, for helping her lose weight. I've tried really hard to let go of this idea of losing weight for vanity reasons and really trying to think of how I can be healthy, she told People at the time. And for me, healthy is working out, moving my body a lot, keeping hydrated, and then not having negative connotations around working out and making me feel like if I don't do this, then I won't be something else, she continued. And that's taken a long time to kind of shed those old ideas of working out.
The actress also revealed that year that restrictive dieting had never really worked for her, adding that she did not dramatically change her eating habits following the birth of her son Spencer in September 2020. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Kaling explained: I eat what I like to eat. If I do any kind of restrictive diet, it never really works for me. I just eat less of it. I wish there was something more juicy or dynamic about the way that I've lost a little bit of weight, but that's the way I've done it, she added.
Kaling is mother to daughters Katherine, eight, and Anne, two, as well as son Spencer, five. The actress has never publicly identified the father of her children, though fans have long speculated about her close relationship with ex-boyfriend BJ Novak.
