Setting powder is a staple in many beauty routines, helping to lock makeup in place, control shine, and blur imperfections for a smoother, longer-lasting finish. Laura Mercier, already renowned for its loose setting powder, has now released two new additions to its family: the Translucent Loose Setting Powder in Ultra Blur Mint (£44, Space NK) and the Secret Brightening Powder (£31, Space NK). The former is designed to correct redness while locking makeup in place for up to 16 hours, while the latter helps to set, smooth, and extend concealer wear, as well as brighten under-eyes.
Honest Review of the Secret Brightening Powder
As someone who struggles with under-eye makeup smudging and creasing, I was eager to test this product. Infused with skincare ingredients, this brightening powder promises to keep concealer in place. To my pleasant surprise, it also helped prevent eyeliner smudging. After using it consistently for over a month, I rarely experience transfer or panda eyes by the end of the day. It does not settle into fine lines, leaving the under-eye area looking smoother and subtly brighter, minimizing the appearance of dark circles.
I opted for the transparent shade due to my fluctuating skin tone. Although the white powder looks intimidating initially, it blends beautifully without leaving any cast. This product has quickly become my go-to; I have already ordered a backup. It is a miracle saviour for keeping under-eye makeup in place.
Honest Review of the Translucent Powder Ultra Blur Mint
My skin has improved, but I still have redness around my chin and upper lip. Having used Laura Mercier's setting powder before, I know it performs well, but the mint colour intrigued me. Upon opening the pot, it looked incredibly bright, but it melted effortlessly into my skin, instantly evening out my complexion and blending all my makeup seamlessly. Redness was visibly toned down within seconds. The powder is impressively lightweight, so it does not feel like an extra layer.
My only gripe is that the loose formula is messy to apply; I wasted some product due to spillage. For a more controlled application, a pressed powder like Charlotte Tilbury's Airbrush Flawless Finish (£23) might be a better option.
Overall Verdict
These two new launches are thoughtful additions to Laura Mercier's roster. The Ultra Blur Mint powder is ideal for those struggling with redness, offering subtle colour correction while delivering a classic soft-focus, long-wear finish. The Secret Brightening Powder is a standout for battling under-eye creasing or smudging, delivering longevity and brightness. Despite minor drawbacks like messiness, both powders exceed expectations in performance. For me, the brightening powder is the hero, but together they upgrade any setting powder routine.
