Kate Ferdinand has candidly discussed her ongoing struggles with stress and anxiety as she adapts to life in Dubai. The 34-year-old former TOWIE star has been transparent about the challenges of relocating to the United Arab Emirates with her family, including husband Rio Ferdinand, his daughter Tia, 14, their son Cree, four, and two-year-old daughter Shae, since their move in August last year.
Lifestyle Changes to Combat Stress
In a recent Instagram post, Kate revealed she is actively working to exit the 'fight or flight' mode and lower her cortisol levels. She has implemented significant lifestyle adjustments, including reducing alcohol consumption and modifying her exercise routine. Kate explained that while she hasn't been a heavy drinker lately, she has further cut back due to experiencing anxiety and hangover effects, making this an easy change for her.
Revamping Fitness and Daily Routines
Kate has shifted her workout regimen from high-intensity exercises to walking and Pilates, emphasizing that fitness remains a crucial part of her life. She told followers she is now focusing on lower-impact activities to support her mental well-being. Additionally, she is consciously slowing down her daily tasks, such as washing her hair, rather than rushing through them, which she previously attributed to a busy lifestyle.
The Science Behind Cortisol and Stress
Cortisol, a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands, plays a key role in regulating metabolism, blood pressure, immune response, and sleep cycles. Chronic stress can lead to persistently high cortisol levels, resulting in issues like weight gain, fatigue, hypertension, and increased anxiety. Kate's efforts to manage her cortisol are part of a broader strategy to improve her health.
Emotional Toll of the Move
Kate recently admitted to struggling with the relocation, breaking down in tears as she expressed missing her family. While she describes Dubai as an 'amazing' place to live, she has found it difficult to be apart from Rio's two eldest sons, Lorenz, 19, and Tate, 17, who stayed in the UK to pursue their football careers. This separation has been a significant emotional challenge for the family.
Family Perspectives and Mental Health Strategies
In an interview with Men’s Health UK, Rio Ferdinand framed the move as an adventure, highlighting it as a rare opportunity to step out of their comfort zone. Meanwhile, Kate shared with Women’s Health UK that she relies on exercise and therapy to maintain her mental health, stating she is very aware of what works for her. She emphasized the importance of being a healthy role model for her children and the benefits of outdoor activities and open communication.
Balancing Happiness and Homesickness
Kate acknowledged that while she feels happy in Dubai and appreciates the benefits for her younger children, who are thriving in the new environment, she still misses London and the UK deeply. She noted that the move has allowed Rio to be more present with the family after stepping back from his pundit role at TNT Sports last year. However, she continues to grapple with the adjustment, describing it as very hard due to the family's close bond and past experiences together.
