As summer approaches, many gardeners eagerly watch their berries and fruits ripen, only to find birds have beaten them to the harvest. While this can be frustrating, there is a simple, harmless method to deter birds without causing them any harm.
The Reflective Garden Trick
Gardening influencer Brooke Morgan, who shares her adventures with 139,000 Instagram followers, has revived an old trick with a modern twist. She learned from elders at a community garden that reflective objects can keep birds away from fruit and berries.
"A really cool lesson I learned from the elders at my old community garden is that birds will stay away from your fruit and your berries if there's reflective things," she explained. Traditionally, people hung CDs or DVDs in fruit trees, but Brooke didn't have any on hand.
Instead, she turned to Amazon for small disco balls, which came with strings attached, making them perfect for hanging in fruit trees. She hung several at varying heights to protect her growing fruit.
Reaction and Additional Tips
Her post garnered admiring comments, with one user saying, "I don't know why but this made my day," and another adding, "This is incredible." Another follower suggested checking second-hand stores for scratched CDs and DVDs at low cost.
Why Reflective Items Work
Shiny objects like CDs, tape, mirrors, or disco balls deter birds by creating sudden flashes of light, unpredictable movement, and visual distortions that mimic predators or threats. Combined with metallic rustling sounds, these trigger a flight response, creating a "distraction zone" that prevents birds from settling or nesting nearby. This method is harmless yet highly effective as a short-term visual deterrent for gardens, balconies, or rooftops.
