A football fan who was warned by his doctor that he would not see his 30th birthday has shed more than half his body weight after a dramatic wake-up call. John MacDonald, then weighing nearly 28 stone, collapsed at his first Slimming World weigh-in with a suspected heart attack, but the terrifying experience became the catalyst for a life-changing transformation.
Doctor's warning sparks change
At just 28 stone, John already had prediabetes, sleep apnoea and high blood pressure. His doctor's stark prognosis that he might not reach 30 was the jolt he needed. He joined Slimming World in 2023, but his journey nearly ended before it began when he suffered a panic attack at his first weigh-in and was rushed to hospital.
John said: "As I stepped on the scales I felt sick, my chest tightened and I collapsed – I thought I was having a heart attack. Kind members drove me to A&E. Looking back it was anxiety, made worse by barely eating in the lead-up to joining."
Turning point
Despite his embarrassment, John returned to the group the following week. He said: "I've had ups and downs, but now I understand how to manage it. I trust the plan and I trust myself. My life has been completely transformed. I've gone from a 52in waist to a 31in waist and can now wear the designer clothes I've always longed to."
John swapped takeaways and sugary drinks for home-cooked meals and low-calorie alternatives. He now enjoys Slimming World's Cajun chicken pasta and walks everywhere, having built up his fitness from a 15-minute walk taking an hour to just five minutes.
Health improvements
His sleep apnoea has gone, his breathing is better, and he has abundant energy. Last month, he celebrated his 30th birthday surrounded by the group that supported him. He said: "A few years ago, I didn't think I'd get here. This whole experience has completely changed my life."
Slimming World Consultant Carrina McGovern praised John's determination: "John's achievement is extraordinary and it's a testament to his determination. Our groups are welcoming, supportive spaces where everyone can succeed."
Laura Holloway from Slimming World's Nutrition, Research and Scientific Affairs team added: "Our groups make a real difference to long-term weight loss. The accountability, shared ideas and practical strategies all help members like John create lasting habits."
John, who has maintained his weight loss for over two years, hopes his story inspires others. He said: "I was terrified walking through the door that first time, but it's the best decision I've ever made. If you're thinking about it – just take that first step."
John's success story features in the current issue of Slimming World Magazine. For details on joining a local group or signing up online, visit slimmingworld.co.uk or call 0344 897 8000.
