As temperatures soar across Wales, reaching over 33°C, pet owners are urged to take extra precautions to keep their dogs safe. The RSPCA warns that dogs can suffer heatstroke and even die in extreme heat, as they can only sweat through their paws, unlike humans.
Brachycephalic breeds, such as pugs, French bulldogs, shih tzus, and boxers, are at greater risk of health problems during hot weather. Owners of these flat-faced dogs must take extra care to keep them cool.
In addition to heatstroke, the RSPCA advises checking pets for flystrike, a painful condition caused by flies laying eggs that hatch into maggots. Check your pet's body, especially around the rear and tail, at least twice a day.
If you notice signs of heatstroke in your dog, contact a vet immediately. The RSPCA recommends keeping dogs in shaded areas, providing plenty of fresh water, and avoiding walks during the hottest parts of the day.
