Eight Simple Mood-Boosting Actions to Support Mental Wellbeing

A new poll has revealed that many UK adults are neglecting their own mental health, with a quarter of respondents taking no action to support it in the past month. The survey of 4,000 UK adults, conducted by Opinium on behalf of the Mental Health Foundation, found that work, family, and daily demands often push self-care to the bottom of the priority list.

The findings come ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week (May 11-17), which focuses on the theme of “action”. The Mental Health Foundation is encouraging people to adopt small, manageable habits to boost mood and improve overall wellbeing. Alexa Knight, director of policy and influencing at the charity, said: “We really want people to not only think about their mental health, but to actually take concrete action.”

Knight highlighted eight simple actions that can be incorporated into daily routines. Spending time in nature, even a short walk in a park or sitting in the garden, can provide a mental health boost. Physical activity, such as dancing in the kitchen or chair yoga, is also beneficial. Taking a break from distressing news and social media scrolling can help, as can making plans to catch up with friends, which fosters hope and positivity.

Other recommendations include establishing a relaxing bedtime routine away from screens, staying hydrated to improve concentration and mood, and practising gratitude by writing down three things to be thankful for each day. Finally, trying a new hobby or learning a new skill can provide a meditative boost and shift focus away from negative thoughts.

Knight emphasised that even small actions can have a significant impact: “It’s important that we all try and prioritise doing something for ourselves, even if it’s just a small thing every week.” The Mental Health Foundation urges everyone to take action for their mental health this Mental Health Awareness Week.
