Sir Chris Hoy Takes Commonwealth Games Role After Cancer

Sir Chris Hoy, the four-time Olympic gold medalist, will take on a prominent role at this month's Glasgow Commonwealth Games, appearing as a television analyst for TNT Sports. This marks his return to the public eye two years after revealing he has terminal stage 4 prostate cancer.

Hoy's Return to the Spotlight

The 54-year-old Scottish cycling legend announced his diagnosis in October 2024 and has since focused on raising awareness and funds for cancer charities. He has largely stayed out of the media spotlight until now. Hoy will provide expert commentary, particularly from the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow's East End, which bears his name.

Hoy competed in two Commonwealth Games, winning two golds and two bronzes in Manchester 2002 and Melbourne 2006.

TNT Sports Executive Praises Hoy

Scott Young, EVP of WBD Sports Europe, said: "Our company has a great relationship with Sir Chris Hoy. We reached out to him to see if he would like to be a part of what we were doing and we're delighted we're working together again. I can't speak for his emotion but we're delighted he is part of the team. He was a phenomenal athlete, a great ambassador for the sport and a fantastic bloke."

Young added: "When we finally enter that venue and he brings that story to life on our channels, it's going to be one of those great stories of these Games. He will be everywhere, not just at the cycling. This was his decision. And we fully support any other decision he needs to make (health-wise) during the Games."

Broadcasting Details and Future Games

TNT Sports has the broadcasting rights for the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, which will involve up to 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories. The BBC will not broadcast the event. The games were moved to Glasgow after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew due to budget concerns, leading to the removal of over 10 sports to reduce costs.

Young also indicated that TNT Sports might consider bidding for the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, India, but said the current contract is only for these games.
