Nobel Medicine Prize 2026: Brain Discoveries Honoured

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to three scientists for their work investigating the mysteries of the brain. Karl Deisseroth of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Stanford University, Peter Hegemann of the Humboldt University of Berlin and Georg Nagel of the University of Würzburg received the prize “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics”.

How Optogenetics Is Transforming Neuroscience

Science correspondent Nicola Davis explained to Madeleine Finlay how this technique is already transforming neuroscience. Optogenetics allows researchers to control the activity of specific neurons using light, providing unprecedented insight into brain function.

Potential Future Applications

The technique could one day help restore sight, remove pain and tackle diseases like addiction and Alzheimer's, according to the discussion. The discoveries open new avenues for treating a range of neurological conditions.
