Wishaw MSP urges residents to take up HPV vaccine

MSP Clare Adamson has encouraged residents across Motherwell and Wishaw to take up the HPV vaccine, highlighting its proven success in helping to prevent cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers.

In Scotland, the HPV vaccine is routinely offered to pupils in S1 and re-offered throughout secondary school. Latest figures show that 83.6% of young people in North Lanarkshire had received the vaccine by the end of S4.

Remarkable results from vaccination programme

Research published in 2024 found that no cases of cervical cancer had been detected in women who were fully vaccinated against HPV at age 12 or 13 since Scotland’s vaccination programme began in 2008.

However, despite Scotland continuing to have high uptake rates, national figures show overall vaccination rates have fallen from 93.3% in 2015/16 to 82.9% in 2024/25, underlining the importance of continued public awareness and participation.

Call to maintain strong vaccination rates

Commenting, SNP MSP Clare Adamson said: “The HPV vaccine is one of the most effective public health interventions available and Scotland’s vaccination programme has delivered remarkable results.”

“The fact that no cervical cancer cases have been detected among women who were fully vaccinated at age 12 or 13 demonstrates just how important this vaccine is in protecting people from cancer.”

“While it is encouraging that uptake in North Lanarkshire remains high, these figures show that we cannot be complacent. Maintaining strong vaccination rates is essential if we are to continue preventing cancers caused by HPV.”

“I would encourage everyone in Motherwell and Wishaw who is eligible for the HPV vaccine to take up the offer and help protect themselves and future generations from HPV-related cancers.”
