A potentially lethal West Nile virus outbreak has spread across 16 European countries, with fatalities reported. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control's most recent update identifies 86 affected areas across the continent.
Affected Countries
The mosquito-borne virus has been detected in Italy, Greece, Romania, France, the Netherlands, Serbia, Spain, Croatia, North Macedonia, Belgium, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Kosovo, Albania and Cyprus.
Most people infected experience mild flu-like symptoms or no symptoms at all. However, one in 150 people develop serious complications including meningitis, encephalitis, and paralysis. Severe cases can lead to high fever, confusion, muscle weakness, and coma.
Risk and Prevention
Travel Health Pro warned: "Some people, including older travellers, those with long term health problems and anyone with a weakened immune system are more at risk of getting seriously ill."
There is currently no specific treatment for West Nile virus infection. Hospital supportive care is essential for severe cases. The only prevention is avoiding mosquito bites through protective measures.
