UK sperm donor shortage: 57% of new registrations overseas

New figures show that 57% of new sperm donor registrations in the UK in 2024 came from overseas donors, prompting fertility bosses to urge more British men to consider donating.

Data from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) reveals that the proportion of overseas donors has nearly doubled from 33% a decade earlier, while the number of UK-based donors has remained broadly unchanged.

Fertility clinics see rise in donor sperm treatments

Figures from TFP Fertility, a leading provider, show a 73% rise in donor sperm treatment cycles across its UK clinics since 2018. The company says it is reliant on overseas sperm banks to help people build families.

Research commissioned by TFP reveals that 35% of UK men have never donated sperm but would consider doing so.

Emotional barriers and stigma

Dr James Hopkisson, from TFP Fertility, said: "It is important that we also encourage more men in the UK to consider becoming sperm donors."

"Our figures show just how much donor sperm treatment has grown across our clinics, yet our research suggests there are men across Britain who would consider donating but may be held back by uncertainty, stigma or simply not knowing enough about the process."

More than a third (37%) of men are discouraged by the thought of having a biological child they may never meet, while 35% cite privacy concerns.

Encouraging more men to donate

Dr Hopkisson added: "Behind every donor sperm treatment is someone hoping to start or grow their family, and the generosity of donors can make a life-changing difference."

"Becoming a sperm donor is a significant and personal decision, but by opening up conversations, challenging misconceptions and providing clear, trusted information, we hope to encourage more men to explore whether donation could be right for them."

TFP Fertility is highlighting its sperm sharing initiative, which gives eligible men undergoing fertility treatment the opportunity to donate sperm and help others on their journey to parenthood.
