UK health authorities have been advised to consider monitoring passengers arriving from Russia amid concerns over a possible plague case, following the death of a 28-year-old anti-plague scientist in Siberia.
Daria Shipilova died in the region, and Russian authorities insist there is no plague outbreak, saying she died from “pneumonia of unknown aetiology”.
Close contacts placed under observation
Almost 200 people who had contact with Shipilova have been placed under observation, while more than 60 colleagues remain isolated inside her research institute.
Several countries have also tightened border health controls in response to the situation.
Expert urges airport screening
Dr Weber, who previously worked in the US Department of Defence, told The Sun: “If I were a public health authority in London, I would be monitoring flights and passengers coming from the region and screening them at the airport.”
