Beachgoers and swimmers are being urgently warned to avoid the water at one of Northern Ireland's most popular coastal destinations. A significant sewage discharge has prompted a major public health alert for Benone Beach, County Londonderry.
The warning was issued after a mechanical failure at a nearby pumping station, operated by Ulster Water, led to a substantial release of untreated sewage into the environment. The incident has raised serious concerns about water quality and public safety.
The public is strongly advised to refrain from all water-based activities, including:
- Swimming and paddling
- Surfing and other water sports
- Allowing pets to enter the water
While the beach itself remains accessible for walks, authorities are taking a precautionary approach, emphasising that contact with the water could pose a health risk. The notice will remain in effect until comprehensive water testing confirms it is safe for public use.
A spokesperson for Ulster Water stated, "We are prioritising the resolution of this issue and are working to minimise the environmental impact. We apologise for any inconvenience and urge the public to follow the advice until further notice."
Local residents and visitors are encouraged to monitor official channels for updates on when the all-clear will be given and the warning lifted.
