BBC Wales Today presenter Lucy Owen has undergone major eye surgery, sharing an update from her hospital bed on Instagram. The 54-year-old journalist posted a photo showing a cotton pad over her left eye, protected by a plastic shield and secured with scotch tape.
In a lengthy caption, Owen thanked the NHS for the care she received. She wrote: "All done. Yet another huge thank you to the NHS for the wonderful care I've had."
Gratitude to medical team
Owen praised Mr Williams and his team, stating: "Mr Williams and his team saved my sight just over a year ago, and now they're helping improve it. So very grateful always." She added that after some recovery time, she will be back on television next week, noting limited makeup is allowed.
The health issue began last year when she was rushed to hospital after suffering unexpected visual impairment.
Previous on-air incident
In May, Owen was forced to hand over the news bulletin to weather presenter Derek Brockway after being overcome by a coughing fit while reading a story about Wrexham football club. She later apologised on Instagram, writing: "This has only happened to me once before, and it's an awful feeling. I really didn't think I was going to get to the end of the story. Fine during rehearsal, but it just came out of the blue. If you were watching huge apologies, at least you got most of your news croak and cough-free."
Career background
Owen began her career at BBC Radio Wales as a researcher. She joined HTV Wales in 1995 as a newsreader and hosted Wales Tonight. She later presented on the ITV News Channel and anchored the main ITV News. In 2007, she moved to the BBC to present BBC Wales Today and has also hosted the consumer show X Ray. She is married to Welsh presenter Rhodri Owen.
