Rare Tropical Virus Detected in UK: Oropouche Fever Cases Linked to Brazil Travel
Rare tropical virus cases detected in UK travellers

Health authorities in the UK have identified two cases of the rare tropical virus Oropouche fever, marking the first known instances of the disease outside Brazil. The patients, who recently travelled to South America, are now recovering under medical supervision.

What is Oropouche Fever?

Oropouche fever is a mosquito-borne viral illness typically found in tropical regions of Central and South America. Symptoms include:

  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light

How Did It Reach the UK?

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed both patients contracted the virus during recent travel to Brazil. While the disease isn't known to spread between humans, experts are monitoring for potential local transmission through mosquito vectors.

Should the Public Be Concerned?

Dr Meera Chand of UKHSA reassured the public: "The risk to the wider population remains very low. These are isolated cases linked to travel, and we have robust systems to detect and respond to such infections."

However, health officials advise travellers to tropical regions to take precautions against mosquito bites, including:

  1. Using insect repellent
  2. Wearing long-sleeved clothing
  3. Sleeping under mosquito nets

Scientific Response

The UKHSA is working with international partners to understand the virus better and assess any potential for spread in European climates. Researchers emphasise that while concerning, this detection demonstrates the effectiveness of the UK's disease surveillance systems.
