Can You Reuse Cooking Oil After Frying? Chef Settles Debate

Frying oil can be reused multiple times before disposal, according to experts at King Arthur Baking, who say its lifespan is longer than many realise. Reusing oil is one of the best ways to reduce waste and cost in frying.

How Many Times Can Oil Be Reused?

The consensus is that oil can be used two to three times for fried, breaded foods like chicken. For plain vegetables or potatoes, it may last around four to six uses. However, the oil must be properly cleaned and strained before each reuse.

Chef Ian Fujimoto, known as @iankyo on TikTok, has shared his method for cleaning used frying oil in a video that has garnered over 700,000 likes. He says that after frying, there will be little bits stuck in the oil, but that doesn't mean the oil is bad.

Cleaning Methods for Used Oil

Fujimoto runs the oil through a fine-mesh sieve to remove larger debris. He also recommends a cornstarch slurry—one part water to one part cornstarch—which he adds to hot oil. The debris attaches to the sticky cornstarch, which can then be removed.

The method works regardless of the oil type, whether sunflower, vegetable, or olive. Fujimoto reuses his oil several times before replacing it.

When to Dispose of Oil

If the oil smells sour or like paint, or becomes very dark and thick, it should be disposed of immediately.
