Schoolboy's Boxing Dreams Shattered After Waking Up Paralyzed by Spinal Tumour

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a British schoolboy's lifelong ambition to become a professional boxer has been brutally cut short after he woke up one morning paralyzed from the waist down. James Lewis, a 13-year-old from Bexley in Greater London, had been training at the boxing gym twice a week since the tender age of five, nurturing dreams of a future in the ring. However, a cruel health twist has now left him facing an entirely different kind of battle.

A Sudden and Terrifying Awakening

The nightmare began in March 2021 when James awoke with no feeling in his lower body. "He tried to stand up and fell to the floor like jelly," recounted his father, also named James Lewis. Rushed to hospital, scans revealed the devastating cause: an 18-centimetre benign tumour entwined with his spinal cord. The tumour, measuring half the length of his spine, had haemorrhaged and was compressing the cord, leading to the sudden paralysis.

This diagnosis came after years of unexplained symptoms. James had previously been diagnosed with scoliosis, a condition causing the spine to curve sideways. His father, a 36-year-old landscaper, explained that his son's health had been deteriorating, with loss of balance and control of his bladder and bowel. "It was horrendous," the elder James said. "We didn't really know what was going on, but then we could start putting all the pieces of the puzzle together."

An Unremitting Medical Ordeal

Since the tumour's discovery, young James has endured a gruelling medical journey. He has undergone multiple surgeries and chemotherapy treatments. However, doctors have stated that surgical removal of the tumour is impossible because it is intricately entwined with his spinal cord. In January 2026, he underwent his most recent surgery after completely losing function in his legs, bowel, and bladder.

His father detailed the relentless cycle: "He was declining, and each surgery relieved symptoms—but only really for three or four weeks." Following the latest operation, James is currently in an intensive rehabilitation programme expected to last four to twelve weeks. Despite this, he has yet to regain any feeling in his legs and suffers complete loss of bowel and bladder control. Once rehabilitation concludes, he faces another 16 months of chemotherapy.

Dreams Deferred, Spirit Undimmed

The tumour's impact forced James to abandon his boxing dreams, as it destroyed his proprioception and sensation, crucial for footwork and balance. "He wanted to be a professional boxer," his father said wistfully. Yet, in the face of this adversity, James has shown remarkable resilience. He has discovered a new passion in fishing, which his father describes as "truly amazing for him because it's something he's been able to do."

The community has rallied around the brave lad. A GoFundMe page, initiated by a member of the fishing community, has successfully raised over £4,560—exceeding its £4,500 target to purchase an electric wheelchair for James. "All the donations are much appreciated," said his father. "It's amazing."

James's story is a poignant reminder of how swiftly life can change. From a dedicated young athlete with a clear vision of his future, he now confronts a daily struggle for basic mobility and health. His father's words capture the family's anguish: "It's been an absolute nightmare." Yet, through the pain and the shattered dreams, James Lewis's fighting spirit, though redirected, remains unmistakably intact.
