The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has unveiled a significant expansion to its benefits eligibility criteria, adding four new health conditions that will now qualify individuals for financial support.
Which Conditions Are Now Covered?
The newly included conditions are:
- Fibromyalgia
- Chronic fatigue syndrome (ME)
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Certain autoimmune disorders
This change comes after extensive consultation with medical professionals and patient advocacy groups, recognising the debilitating impact these conditions can have on daily life and employment.
What This Means for Claimants
Thousands of people previously struggling without adequate support may now be eligible for:
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Universal Credit health top-ups
A DWP spokesperson stated: "We're committed to ensuring the benefits system supports those who need it most. These changes reflect our evolving understanding of chronic health conditions."
How to Apply
Those affected should:
- Check the updated guidance on GOV.UK
- Contact their local Jobcentre Plus
- Gather relevant medical evidence
The changes take effect from next month, with backdated claims possible in some circumstances.
