Davina McCall Reveals Guilt Over Co-Star's Cancer Diagnosis Amid Health Update
Davina McCall's Guilt Over Co-Star's Cancer Diagnosis

Television and radio presenter Davina McCall has candidly discussed the profound guilt she experienced after believing she inadvertently harmed her co-star Jamie Theakston, which preceded his cancer diagnosis. The pair, who host Heart Radio Breakfast together, have both faced significant health challenges in recent years, creating a bond forged through mutual support and shared adversity.

A Burden of Responsibility

During a heartfelt on-air conversation, McCall, 58, revealed that she carried a heavy emotional burden after giving Theakston a tight hug that caused him pain in his throat. This incident occurred shortly before Theakston was diagnosed with stage one laryngeal cancer in 2024. McCall admitted to listeners, "Honestly, when I got you in that sort of grip where I hurt your throat and you found out it was cancer, I carried that burden where I thought I'd hurt you for quite a long time."

An Unexpected Lifesaving Moment

Jamie Theakston, 55, quickly reassured his co-host, emphasizing that her actions may have ultimately saved his life. He explained that the throat pain from the hug prompted him to seek medical attention, leading to the early detection of his cancer. "Well no, because as I always said, if you hadn't have done that, I would never have known," Theakston responded. "Without you doing that, I would not have known there was something wrong with my throat. So, in actual fact, it wasn't that you did any damage - it was the opposite."

Theakston returned to the studio in 2025 following successful surgery and used their platform to deliver a crucial public health message. He urged listeners to take potential symptoms seriously, stating, "Ignoring cancer won't beat it. Cancer loves being ignored. It's a coward that lives in the shadows, and I think that, if we can shine a light on that, then we can defeat the darkness."

Davina's Own Health Journey

While supporting Theakston through his cancer battle, Davina McCall was navigating her own health crisis. In 2024, she underwent surgery for a benign brain tumour called a colloid cyst. More recently, she received a breast cancer diagnosis, describing the moment she learned the news as "like being punched in the face by the universe."

Important Lessons in Self-Checking

McCall shared that she discovered a lump herself in October, despite having a clear mammogram just two months earlier in August. This experience led her to issue a vital reminder to women about regular self-examinations. "I found a lump myself and I had had a mammogram in the August. It was in October that I found a lump, so don't just think, 'I had a mammogram recently, it can't be that' - it could be," she cautioned. "If you've got something, go and get it looked at. It takes seconds."

The former Big Brother host provided an encouraging update on her recovery, revealing that a recent scan showed "nothing there." She reflected on the emotional rollercoaster of her health journey, noting she was "just beginning to feel myself again" when the breast cancer diagnosis arrived.

A Partnership Forged in Adversity

Reflecting on their shared experiences, McCall told Theakston, "We've been on quite a journey, you and me." Their health ordeals have strengthened their professional partnership and personal friendship, with both using their platform to raise awareness about cancer detection and the importance of seeking medical advice promptly.

Theakston emphasized the value of early diagnosis, sharing his own fortunate experience: "If we just get ourselves checked, then a stage one diagnosis - which is what I was very fortunate enough to have - shouldn't be a problem. But I do urge you to go and get checked."

Their candid discussion serves as a powerful reminder of the unpredictable nature of health challenges and the importance of community support during difficult times. Both presenters continue to host Heart Radio Breakfast, bringing their hard-earned perspectives to their audience while encouraging proactive health management.
