A 61-year-old woman says she spends a 'fortune' on mayonnaise — but doesn't eat it. When Vicky DeRosa buys a high-end jar of mayonnaise, she says it won't be in her next sandwich – or in the kitchen at all.
In fact, she plans on scooping it up with her hands and slathering it all over her hair. She said: "I walk around smelling like salad dressing. But then again, everyone loves salad dressing. It does really smell; but it's totally worth it.
"My hair looks healthier and shinier. It's the best results I've ever seen – more than coconut oil masks."
Using Mayonnaise as a Hair Mask
Vicky loves to experiment on herself with natural products in the name of looking younger, for longer. She said: "I use myself as a guinea pig to see how things work. I had tried eggs before, but they get too stiff.
"But mayonnaise is so much easier to apply. Given it contains eggs, it's protein-rich, which the hair needs. But only natural sources."
She added: "Natural products, like mayonnaise, give it the nutrition it needs." Vicky advises those looking to use the condiment to opt for high-end brands instead of cheaper ones - the fewer ingredients, the better.
Overnight Routine and Tips
She puts it on just before she goes to bed and leaves it overnight. While her pillowcases often stink of eggs in the morning, Vicky doesn't care – and has a whole stock in rotation.
She'll then thoroughly rinse her hair with warm water, rubbing in the mayo, before shampooing twice with a natural brand. Vicky said: "You've got to be gentle, though. It's not easy to get out and it does dry quite a bit.
"But doing this when your hair is in need of some TLC, such as during summer or after swimming, is a must."
She urges users not to brush the hair while the mayonnaise is doing its thing, and ensure to use a very good conditioner.
Anti-Ageing Benefits
Vicky said: "I don't eat mayonnaise, but I do use it as a hair mask. It is actually one of the best hair masks that you can use."
She explains that she gets highlights twice a year and does a mayo mask before she goes in.
She added: "You want to start at the top and get it all over your hair. I'm going to let this sit for 30 minutes, wash it, but then next Sunday, I will let it sit overnight and then wash it."
It's not the first anti-ageing trick Vicky has shared. She recently revealed her morning ritual, which takes five minutes and is completely free. It involves using a plain white towel and soaking it in hot water to give an at-home facial. She claims the results have made people think she's 20 years younger.
