The family of jockey Kristy Bennett, who suffered a brain bleed in a fall, has shared a heart-wrenching update on her condition.
Critical Condition After Fall
Kristy Bennett, 29, was taken to hospital in critical but stable condition after an incident during a trial at Gold Coast. Her horse collapsed after crossing the finish line, causing her to fall. She had recently moved from Western Australia to Queensland to ride trackwork for champion trainer Tony Gollan.
According to reports, she suffered a brain bleed. After being attended by medics, she was transported to Southport University Hospital, unconscious but breathing, where she underwent surgery. She has been in an induced coma since the accident more than two weeks ago.
Family's Heartfelt Statement
In an update issued on behalf of her sister Bella and mother Irene, the family said: "Kristy remains stable after suffering traumatic brain injury and vertebrae fractures. She remains unconscious and her rehabilitation could take years to complete. Her journey dealing with this injury is far from over."
The family added: "Going forward, we won't have any updates for some time while the amazing doctors and nurses do their incredible work providing Kristy with the best possible care."
Support from the Racing Community
The Australian Jockeys' Association echoed the family's statement, confirming Kristy remains unconscious with traumatic brain injuries and vertebrae fractures. They expressed gratitude to everyone in Queensland and Western Australia for their unwavering support and love.
Kristy Bennett has ridden 186 winners from nearly 3,000 mounts since her first ride in 2018.
