The Chiefs have provided a reassuring update on All Blacks star Wallace Sititi following the sickening head injury he sustained during their Super Rugby Pacific qualifying final against the Queensland Reds. The 23-year-old was taken to hospital after a heavy collision that left him shaking on the pitch, sparking widespread concern among fans and teammates.
Incident Details
During the Chiefs' 46-24 victory, Sititi collided with the shoulder of Reds forward Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, then bounced into the head of his own teammate Sione Ahio. He lay on the ground, visibly shaking, and required lengthy medical attention before being helped off the field and transported to Waikato Hospital.
Chiefs' Statement
The club took to Instagram to update supporters, stating: "Hey Chiefs fam! Thanks for all your care and love for our guy Wally. He wanted to let you all know he is at home and feeling good, as well as sending his thanks to everyone for their love and support. Scans at Waikato Hospital did not reveal any issues and he will be assessed and cared for through the concussion protocols."
This positive news comes as a relief after the alarming scenes during the match. Chiefs coach Jono Gibbes acknowledged the emotional impact, saying: "The pride, the grit we showed and obviously the enjoyment of getting a result, it's tinged. It's never nice to see one of our brothers in a situation like that but Wally's where he needs to be now, with people that can help him. There's a big part of us that are actually thinking about him right now."
Medical Response Defended
Gibbes also defended the medical team's handling of the incident, particularly when Sititi attempted to stand up during treatment. "They were dealing with a player in distress. It wasn't a case of being able to strictly follow A, B and C," he explained. The team will continue to monitor Sititi as he progresses through concussion protocols.
