Alan Titchmarsh has revealed he 'never told anyone' while he was going through a difficult period, opening up about his early struggles with bullying and anxiety during a repeat episode of his ITV show Love Your Weekend aired on July 5, 2026.
Titchmarsh's Candid Confession About Bullying
The West Yorkshire-born television personality, best known for BBC's Gardener's World and Ground Force, shared his experiences during a conversation with sports presenter turned podcaster Jake Humphrey. The episode, originally from February 2025, also featured Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page.
When Jake asked whether Alan had encountered his own difficulties throughout the years, the broadcaster confessed: "Oh yes, yes. I was small at school and pushed around." He explained how he would withdraw to his bedroom for a solitary cry, adding: "I mean, I never told anyone. Well, my parents obviously knew."
Discussion on Anxiety and Resilience
Jake Humphrey, who began his career as a children's TV presenter before heading up BBC's F1 coverage and BT Sport's Premier League team, spoke openly about his early difficulties breaking into television. He revealed that he contacted a psychiatrist regarding his mental health, who advised him not to dismiss his thoughts.
Jake observed: "We're all comparing our real lives to other people's edited highlights reels, and I think that's super dangerous." Alan concurred, stating: "But we all have anxieties...we always will."
Alan's Advice for Overcoming Adversity
Reflecting on his own journey, Alan said: "You know, it's part of growing up, and we can't shield children from everything. There's no excuse for bullying at all. But, yeah, I was bullied, and if you can find something you love and come to terms with who you are. I was a classic late developer."
He shared guidance for others, suggesting: "You need enablers in life who say 'you know what you should have a go at'. I started as an apprentice gardener, and here I am now with a chat show."
