An alarming safety alert has been issued by medical professionals regarding private high street baby scan clinics operating without proper regulation, with some parents being wrongly told their unborn baby had died.
The Disturbing Reality of Unregulated Scans
The Society of Radiographers has revealed a growing crisis in private pregnancy scanning services, where insufficiently trained staff are making critical errors in diagnosing fetal health. These commercial clinics, often found in shopping centres and high streets across the UK, are providing ultrasound services without adequate medical oversight.
"We're seeing cases where expectant parents are given devastating news that turns out to be completely inaccurate," explained a spokesperson from the professional body. "The emotional trauma of being told your baby hasn't survived, only to discover this was a misdiagnosis, is unimaginable."
What's Going Wrong?
The problems identified by healthcare experts include:
- Poorly trained operators misinterpreting scan images
 - Inadequate equipment maintenance and calibration
 - Lack of proper medical supervision and quality control
 - Failure to recognise when to refer to NHS specialists
 - Commercial pressure leading to rushed assessments

Regulatory Gaps Putting Families at Risk
Unlike NHS ultrasound services, which follow strict clinical guidelines and employ highly trained sonographers, many private clinics operate in a regulatory grey area. There are currently no mandatory training requirements for staff performing these scans outside the NHS system.
"Parents assume these services are medically regulated, but often they're not," the radiographers' warning states. "They're essentially commercial operations providing what appears to be medical reassurance without the necessary expertise."
Protecting Your Pregnancy Journey
Medical professionals advise expectant parents to:
- Always discuss any private scanning plans with your NHS midwife or consultant
 - Choose clinics that employ properly qualified NHS-trained sonographers
 - Be wary of services offering "reassurance scans" at suspiciously low prices
 - Understand that non-NHS scans may not be reviewed by qualified radiologists
 - Remember that NHS scans provide comprehensive medical assessment, not just keepsake images

The Emotional Toll of Misdiagnosis
The psychological impact of being incorrectly told an unborn baby has died cannot be overstated. Families describe the experience as traumatic, with the subsequent relief of discovering the error doing little to erase the initial devastation.
"This isn't just about incorrect information - it's about causing profound emotional harm to vulnerable parents during what should be a joyful experience," the radiographers emphasised.
The Society of Radiographers is calling for tighter regulation of private pregnancy scanning services and better public awareness about the potential risks involved in non-medical ultrasound operations.
