In a significant boost for disabled motorists across the UK, the Motability Scheme has confirmed that hundreds of thousands of recipients will see their payments increase from April 2024. The update comes as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) implements its annual benefit rate changes.
The scheme, which enables disabled people to lease vehicles using their mobility allowances, will automatically adjust its payments in line with the new government rates. This means eligible participants won't need to take any action to receive the increased amount.
What's Changing Exactly?
The current mobility allowance rates are set to rise significantly. The higher mobility payment will increase from £71.00 to £75.75 per week, while the standard mobility payment will see a boost from £26.90 to £28.70 weekly. These changes represent a substantial financial uplift for scheme participants.
Who Qualifies for the Increase?
The payment boost will affect recipients of several key benefits:
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
- War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement
These increases are part of the government's annual adjustment to keep benefits in line with inflation and living costs.
Beyond the Payment Increase
The Motability Scheme offers more than just financial support. Participants also benefit from:
- Insurance coverage for up to three drivers
- Comprehensive breakdown assistance
- Vehicle maintenance and servicing
- Tyre replacement coverage
- Windshield repair services
For those who might not need a vehicle immediately, the scheme allows recipients to wait up to 12 weeks after their qualifying award begins before applying, providing flexibility during transitional periods.
This update represents a crucial financial support mechanism for disabled individuals across Britain, ensuring they can maintain their mobility and independence despite rising living costs.
