Martin Lewis Urges UK Pensioners to Check Attendance Allowance Eligibility Now
Martin Lewis: Check Attendance Allowance Eligibility Now

Money-saving guru Martin Lewis is urging UK pensioners to check if they qualify for Attendance Allowance, a vital but underclaimed benefit that could provide significant financial support.

What is Attendance Allowance?

Attendance Allowance is a tax-free benefit designed to help older people with disabilities or long-term health conditions cover the costs of personal care. Unlike other benefits, it isn't means-tested, meaning your income or savings won't affect your eligibility.

Who Can Claim It?

To qualify, you must:

  • Be State Pension age or older
  • Have a physical or mental disability requiring care
  • Have needed help for at least six months (unless terminally ill)

Martin Lewis stresses that many eligible pensioners miss out because they assume they won't qualify or find the application process daunting.

How Much Could You Get?

There are two rates:

  • Lower rate (£72.65/week): For those needing help during the day or night
  • Higher rate (£108.55/week): For those needing help both day and night, or who are terminally ill

"This isn't pocket money—it's life-changing support," Lewis emphasises.

How to Claim

Applications can be made:

  1. Online via GOV.UK
  2. By post using form AA1
  3. By calling the DWP's Attendance Allowance helpline

Lewis advises gathering medical evidence and keeping a diary of care needs before applying.

With rising living costs, this benefit could make a crucial difference for thousands of pensioners. As Lewis puts it: "If you or a loved one might qualify, don't delay—check today."
