Chris Hughton shares recovery journey after prostate cancer surgery
Chris Hughton opens up on prostate cancer recovery

Former Premier League manager Chris Hughton has spoken candidly about his recovery after being diagnosed with prostate cancer last year. The 67-year-old, who previously managed Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion, underwent surgery in May and says he is now in a really good place.

Diagnosis and treatment

Hughton, who also played for Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Brentford, and the Republic of Ireland, revealed that he opted for prostate removal following medical advice. He told the Daily Mail: 'I had very good advice and all the treatment options were given to me, and I decided to have my prostate removed.'

The former manager added: 'The recovery has gone really well. I’m one year post-operation and I feel good. It’s all gone very well. I’ve got a lot of energy.'

Keeping active and positive

Hughton emphasised the importance of staying active during recovery. 'Keeping active and busy is part of how I am anyway, but it’s also about rehabilitation and keeping your mind active as well. I’m very comfortable with my prognosis and my post-operation feelings. I’m in a really good place,' he said.

As a player, Hughton won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup with Tottenham before moving into coaching. He spent 14 years on the Spurs backroom staff from 1993 to 2007 before stepping into management.

Managerial career

Hughton led Newcastle to the Championship title in the 2009-10 season, securing an immediate return to the Premier League after relegation. He was surprisingly sacked by the Magpies in December 2010 but went on to manage several clubs, including a five-year spell at Brighton from 2014 to 2019.

In 2023, he was appointed manager of the Ghana national team but was dismissed in early 2024 after the team failed to progress beyond the group stage of that year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
