Alan Titchmarsh Unveils Simple Four-Step Guide to Crafting Stunning Garden Borders
Renowned gardener and BBC Gardeners' World presenter Alan Titchmarsh has released an instructional video detailing a straightforward four-step process for creating the ideal garden border. The 76-year-old horticultural expert shared this valuable guidance on his popular YouTube channel, Gardening with Alan Titchmarsh, aiming to help viewers avoid common pitfalls that he says "most people get wrong" when designing their outdoor spaces.
Step One: Clearing the Bed for Transformation
Alan begins his tutorial by visiting a garden bed he intends to transform into a vibrant border. His first crucial step involves thoroughly clearing the area by extracting perennial plants—those hardy varieties that survive beyond two years and typically flower during spring and summer. He emphasizes the advantage of undertaking this task in early spring, noting that plants are more resilient to being moved during this season.
"Just start somewhere," Alan advises in the video. "The great thing about early spring is that stuff is happy to be moved and it can stay out for a good few days as long as it doesn't dry out. Stick 'em in the wheelbarrow and put them somewhere else while I get everything out of here." He cautions gardeners to remain vigilant for any lingering roots that need removal, suggesting using a fork to prise them out and clean the soil thoroughly.
Step Two: Dividing Perennials for Cost-Effective Planting
The second stage focuses on dividing larger perennial plants to create new ones, a technique that Alan highlights as both economical and effective for covering more ground. He explains that while some clumps are small enough to remain intact, others benefit from being split into smaller pieces.
"Some of these clumps are small enough to be left as they are," Alan states. "Others are larger, and this is when you can do some divvying up, dividing a large clump...into smaller pieces, saving yourself money, covering a larger portion of ground....They really don't mind." This approach not only maximizes plant material but also encourages healthier growth across the border.
Step Three: Enhancing Soil Quality for Optimal Growth
Alan's third step is dedicated to improving the soil, a fundamental aspect often overlooked by amateur gardeners. He demonstrates working in sections and showcases his preferred soil improver, which attracts beneficial grubs and worms to enrich the earth. His recommendation is to apply the improver generously rather than sparingly.
"Don't just give it [the soil] a little sprinkling...be generous," he advises. "Quite a good dressing over the top, right the way across. And then, if it falls in any clods, you can spread them out. Don't waste any of it, then spread it out fairly evenly so you've got a layer on the surface all the way over, just making sure it's even to start with and lightly fork it in." This ensures the soil is nutrient-rich and well-aerated, providing an ideal foundation for plant health.
Step Four: Strategic Planning for a Cohesive Border Design
The final step involves creating a detailed planting strategy to transform the cleared bed into a visually appealing border. Alan stresses the importance of careful planning to avoid common mistakes like purchasing insufficient or excessive quantities of plants.
"What I need to work out is how many plants I need to go back in that border," he explains. "It's so easy to shoot down the garden centre and get back, you haven't got enough of one and you've got too much of another. Try and do yourself a little grid which shows how many plants you're going to need. That way, they stand a chance of growing well, and also, you'll waste far less money."
Alan recommends measuring the bed and using a grid plan to mark out individual square metres, with planting density depending on the mature size of the plants. For example, he suggests placing one shrub or four perennials per square metre. Initially marking these on the grid, followed by sketching drifts to form natural shapes, helps achieve a balanced and aesthetically pleasing border that maintains interest throughout the year.
By following these four methodical steps—clearing, dividing, improving soil, and strategic planning—gardeners can create beautiful, sustainable borders that thrive across seasons. Alan Titchmarsh's expert guidance offers a practical solution to common gardening errors, empowering enthusiasts to enhance their outdoor spaces with confidence and efficiency.
