Massive Blaze Engulfs Bermondsey Recycling Centre
Approximately 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines have been deployed to combat a significant fire at a recycling centre in south London. The blaze erupted at the facility on Landmann Way in Bermondsey, with fire control officers receiving the first reports just after 5:30 PM on Monday.
Firefighting Response
The London Fire Brigade dispatched crews from Deptford, Old Kent Road, and Greenwich, along with two 32-metre turntable ladders. Footage shared on social media depicted enormous plumes of thick smoke rising high above the city, visible for miles.
Residents in the vicinity have been advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke. The fire has also impacted train travel, with passengers on routes between Charing Cross and London Bridge urged to check services before traveling and consider delaying their journeys if possible. Southeastern Railway reported that Hastings line services are starting and terminating at Tonbridge in Kent.
Previous Incidents
This incident echoes a similar event three years ago, when 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters responded to a fire at another recycling centre in Herne Hill, south-west London. In that case, the entire building went up in flames and partially collapsed, though no injuries were reported.
The cause of the current fire is under investigation, and authorities continue to monitor the situation.
