Flying ants become a common nuisance across the UK in July, but a simple kitchen item—white vinegar—can help prevent them from invading your home. Spraying a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar around garden entry points, doors, and windows acts as a natural deterrent, as ants strongly dislike the smell of acetic acid.
Why July Is Peak Season for Flying Ants
July marks the peak swarming season for flying ants in the UK, when warmer temperatures drive them toward homes. The insects are particularly abundant during this time, often causing distress for homeowners. However, natural methods can keep them at bay without the need for harsh chemicals.
The Vinegar Solution: How It Works
Instagram influencer Barbara Costello, known as Brunch with Babs, shared a DIY all-natural ant deterrent: mix half water and half white vinegar in a spray bottle. She advises spraying around doors, windows, and cracks where ants enter. “Ants hate the smell of vinegar so the mixture will deter them from entering your home. This does NOT kill the ants,” Costello explained.
The acetic acid in vinegar disrupts the ants' sense of smell, masking the pheromone trails they rely on for navigation. This confuses them and prevents them from finding their way inside.
Additional Natural Options
Costello also noted that ants dislike the smell of oranges, suggesting an alternative solution using orange peels. This offers another natural approach for those seeking variety.
Application Tips and Precautions
To apply, combine equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray around windows, doors, and other potential entry points in the garden. The effect diminishes as the vinegar smell fades, so reapplication is necessary—typically every few days or after rain. Avoid spraying vinegar directly onto natural stone surfaces like granite or marble, as the acid can damage them.
When to Seek Professional Help
For severe infestations, this natural deterrent may not be sufficient. In such cases, it is best to consult a professional pest control service to address the problem effectively.
