Vets at PetMD have issued a warning to owners of nine specific dog breeds as temperatures across the UK are set to climb from Sunday, with forecasts predicting highs of 30°C in some areas. The experts say these breeds 'can't tolerate' the heat as well as others and are at higher risk of heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses.
Breeds Most Vulnerable to Overheating
The nine breeds highlighted by the vets include those with thick double coats or flat faces, which make it harder for them to cool down. The list comprises: Akita, Alaskan Malamute, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Chow Chow, English Bulldog, French Bulldog, Pekingese, and Pug.
According to PetMD, a dog's body temperature can quickly rise to dangerous levels in hot weather, which can even prove fatal in severe cases. Owners are urged to limit outdoor time during the hottest part of the day and keep walks to cooler morning or evening hours.
Signs of Heatstroke and Prevention Tips
Providing plenty of shade, fresh drinking water, and a cool resting place is essential. Air conditioning, fans, and cooling mats can help dogs regulate their body temperature, while cool baths can offer relief during very hot spells. Vets stress that dogs showing signs of overheating should be taken to a vet as soon as possible.
Many of the breeds on the list have thick double coats that trap heat or flat faces that make panting less effective. For example, the Akita's thick double coat and heavy build make it prone to overheating, while the French Bulldog's short muzzle limits its ability to cool itself. The Pekingese, with its long coat and flat face, may benefit from a summer haircut.
Specific Breed Advice
- Akita: Thick double coat and large build; avoid midday heat.
- Alaskan Malamute: Bred for cold climates; regular grooming and indoor rest recommended.
- Boston Terrier: Short muzzle; keep in cool, well-ventilated areas.
- Boxer: High energy and flat face; limit walks to early morning or evening.
- Chow Chow: Thick coat and heavy build; regular grooming helps.
- English Bulldog: Flat face; avoid outdoor activity during peak heat.
- French Bulldog: Popular breed with short muzzle; use cooling mats and fans.
- Pekingese: Long coat and flat face; consider a summer haircut.
- Pug: Small but flat-faced; ensure good ventilation.
As the UK braces for another heatwave, owners of these breeds are advised to take extra precautions to keep their pets safe and cool.
