A family's spring break hike in Utah turned into a dramatic rescue mission when a parent plunged an estimated 70 to 80 feet down a treacherous canyon cliff, surviving with severe injuries that required an urgent airlift to a trauma center.
The Incident in Pritchett Canyon
The accident occurred on April 10 in Pritchett Canyon near Moab, a region famed for its rugged sandstone formations and precipitous drop-offs. According to the Grand County Search and Rescue (GCSAR), the family of four had parked their two motorcycles with side-by-sides near Pritchett Arch and began walking toward a higher viewpoint. They split into two groups, with one parent and child moving ahead while the other parent and child trailed behind.
While hiking, the trailing parent reportedly ventured too close to the edge of a cliff, triggering a catastrophic fall. The individual tumbled an estimated 70 to 80 feet before sliding another 50 feet down slickrock terrain. No one witnessed the fall directly, but one of the children heard screams and immediately alerted the other parent, who used the satellite function on an iPhone to text 911 for emergency assistance.
Complex Rescue Operation
A rescue helicopter arrived on the scene within approximately five minutes, landing about 150 yards from the injured hiker. Specialized climbing teams were deployed to locate the victim, who was found in a steep, sloped area of the canyon. Due to the challenging and hazardous terrain, responders employed drilled rock anchors and sophisticated rope systems to safely access and extract the patient.
Crews executed a technical rope rescue utilizing equipment such as ropes, webbing, carabiners, anchoring bolts, and descent devices. The entire operation, from the time of the accident until the patient was evacuated, lasted just under three hours, showcasing the efficiency and coordination of the rescue teams.
Severe Injuries and Medical Response
Upon reaching the victim, responders discovered the parent had sustained extensive injuries, including open fractures and potential internal trauma. Given the critical nature of the injuries, a medical helicopter was promptly requested to assist with urgent transport. The injured adult was airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition, though their current health status has not been publicly released by officials.
In addition to the medical helicopter, another helicopter from the Utah Department of Public Safety was utilized to retrieve search-and-rescue personnel and equipment from the canyon after the mission was completed, transporting them back to the operations center.
Safety Warnings from Authorities
Following the rescue, GCSAR issued a public warning about the deceptive hazards of Moab's canyon terrain. In a Facebook post, the agency emphasized that slick sandstone can appear stable but may suddenly give way to steep cliffs. "So many of us enjoy the wilderness that surrounds the Moab area," the statement read. "The ubiquitous advice to 'Be Careful' is sound and sometimes bad things happen to good people. GCSAR wishes the family the best of luck moving forward."
