UK Foreign Office Wildfire Warnings for Turkey, Italy, Cyprus

The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Turkey, Cyprus and Italy, warning British travellers of the risk of wildfires at popular holiday destinations. This comes as temperatures soar across southern Europe, increasing the wildfire threat.

Deadly Wildfires in Spain

Last week, devastating wildfires raged near the village of Bedar in Andalusia, Spain, resulting in the deaths of 13 people, including several British nationals. Among the victims was a 93-year-old British woman who was taken to hospital on Friday after suffering burns to about 20 per cent of her body but later died. Four others who died were found in a burnt-out car and are believed to have been British. Two British hikers were rescued from the wildfire with severe burns and are currently in hospital in a critical condition.

Wildfire Guidance for Turkey

Wildfires happen frequently in Turkey during summer. Travellers could face a fine or prison sentence for lighting a fire of any kind or discarding cigarettes in risk areas such as woodland. Look out for signs that indicate fires, barbeques, and smoking are prohibited. If there is a wildfire in your area, local authorities may tell you to leave your accommodation. Follow their directions. If you see a wildfire, call emergency services on 112.
