A devastating fire has completely destroyed the top marine science laboratory at the University of South Florida (USF), with officials investigating whether a lightning strike may have been the cause.
Massive Response to Blaze
Approximately 200 firefighters and over 60 units responded to the two-alarm fire on Saturday at the USF campus in St Petersburg, Florida. Despite their efforts, the Marine Science Laboratory building was entirely consumed by the flames.
Michael Lewis, the St Petersburg fire chief, confirmed that the response was substantial, with crews working tirelessly to contain the fire. However, the building could not be saved.
Possible Cause Under Investigation
USF President Moez Limayem stated that lightning storms in the area at the time of the fire are being considered as a potential cause. "St Pete Fire and Rescue said there was lightning reported in the area around the time the fire started, but the cause remains under investigation," Limayem said in a statement.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials have not yet determined the exact origin of the blaze.
Commitment to Rebuild
Despite the significant loss, Limayem expressed determination to rebuild the facility. "We will rebuild stronger than ever and my commitment is to do everything we can to move quickly to ensure that we have the best possible facilities to support our world class students, faculty and staff," he added.
The marine science lab was a leading research institution, and its destruction is a major blow to the scientific community. However, USF officials are already planning for reconstruction to continue their important work.
