The London Fire Brigade has issued a recall warning for the UNU E-Moped Scooter Classic after a defective battery caused a fire in an underground car park in Kensal Town in March. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) confirmed the recall, urging owners to stop using the moped immediately and disconnect it from any power source.
Investigation and Recall
The Brigade's Fire Investigation Team investigated the blaze, which occurred while the e-moped was not charging. No injuries were reported. Investigators discovered that the model had been recalled in Europe but not in the UK. Following a Product Fire Notification from the London Fire Brigade, the OPSS extended the recall to the UK.
Product Fire Notifications on the Rise
Since the start of 2025, the London Fire Brigade has issued nearly 600 Product Fire Notifications covering e-bikes, e-scooters, power banks, laptops, and household appliances like washing machines and fridge freezers. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Richard Field said: “Our fire investigators play an extremely valuable role in helping to protect consumers from dangerous products. They go to incidents across the city seeing first-hand the dangers and consequences products can have on lives and livelihoods. If clear issues or trends are identified, it is vital that lessons can be learned from these incidents to prevent similar ones in the future.”
Manufacturer Insolvency and Disposal
The OPSS confirmed that the manufacturer of the e-moped has entered insolvency. Owners should dispose of their moped safely at a local waste disposal site, checking first if the battery type is accepted. Field added: “The Product Fire Notifications are a crucial part of that prevention work and we are pleased to see this action taken by the OPSS and echo their warning to those who own this product to stop using it immediately, in order to protect themselves and others.”
