Mosquito-Borne Disease Warning for UK Holidaymakers in Europe
Disease Warning for UK Holidaymakers in Europe

An NHS doctor has warned UK holidaymakers about the increased risk of mosquito-borne diseases in five popular European destinations. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reports that invasive Aedes mosquitoes, including the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), continue to spread across Europe, causing local outbreaks of chikungunya.

Outbreaks in Popular Holiday Destinations

Dr Steven White, theoretical ecologist at UKCEH, stated: "Where the mosquito has established there is a risk of local outbreaks of chikungunya and dengue. There were record numbers of local outbreaks of chikungunya in France and Italy – which are very popular with UK holidaymakers - in 2025." Dr White added that the chance of infection remains low but advised travellers to protect themselves from mosquito bites.

Symptoms to Watch For

Dr John Akinjolire, medical expert at PayingTooMuch, highlighted that dengue has been identified in Croatia, France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. Symptoms include fever, headaches, and severe joint pain. He said: "If symptoms develop during or after travel, particularly a high fever alongside joint pain or a rash, medical attention should be sought promptly." Most people recover fully, but joint pain may persist, and vulnerable groups such as the elderly, those with weakened immune systems, and young children should take extra care.

Protection and Travel Advice

Sarah Rodrigues, travel expert at Avanti Travel Insurance, recommended using DEET-based mosquito repellent, especially during peak mosquito activity. Wearing long sleeves, trousers, and closed-toe shoes made of breathable materials can provide additional protection. She stressed the importance of travel insurance for emergency medical treatment or repatriation, but cautioned that cover varies and claims may be affected if vaccinations or medical advice are not followed.
