Metal Spoon Trick Extends Cucumber Life
A straightforward kitchen hack using a common metal spoon can keep cucumbers fresh for up to two weeks, according to food specialist Marzia, founder of Little Spice Jar. Cucumbers often spoil quickly due to improper storage, especially when exposed to temperatures below 10°C, which causes chilling damage leading to bruising, shrivelling, and sliminess.
How the Hack Works
Marzia explains: "Add [cucumbers] to a glass or plastic container with a tight-fitting lid. Add a metal spoon to the same container. Snap the lid on the container and place it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks." The metal spoon helps regulate consistent temperatures around the cucumbers, preventing cold damage. Including a paper towel to absorb excess moisture is also recommended.
Optimal Fridge Placement
Place the container on the top or middle shelf of the fridge, where temperatures are most moderate. Avoid storing cucumbers at the back of the fridge or near the freezer vent, as extreme cold can cause chilling injuries. Additionally, keep cucumbers away from tomatoes, which release ethylene gas—an invisible, odourless gas that accelerates ripening and spoilage of nearby produce.
Benefits of Proper Storage
By spending just a few minutes storing cucumbers correctly with a metal spoon, they can remain fresh and crunchy for up to a fortnight longer than usual, reducing food waste and saving money.
