Trillions of pollen particles were shattered by rain and lightning, releasing tiny fragments that caused severe respiratory distress. Emergency services were overwhelmed, with hospital admissions for asthma nearly ten times higher than normal. Ten people died, including a 20-year-old law student who collapsed on her lawn.
Paul Beggs, an environmental health scientist at Macquarie University, described the event as 'unprecedented' and 'catastrophic'. He noted that many victims had no prior asthma diagnosis. Thunderstorm asthma occurs when storms break pollen into inhalable particles, triggering allergic reactions even in non-asthmatics.
Climate change is extending pollen seasons and increasing pollen production in many regions, including the US, Europe, and Australia. This year, US pollen levels are predicted to be above historical averages in 39 states. Beggs is 'reasonably certain' that climate change contributed to the 2016 Melbourne event, as it alters pollen seasonality and types.
While thunderstorm asthma remains rare, similar incidents have occurred in Birmingham, UK, and Atlanta, US. Climate change may increase their frequency by lengthening pollen seasons and intensifying storms. Experts urge awareness and preparedness as global warming continues to supercharge allergies.
