Sprinkle 1 leftover ingredient in soil to keep slugs away

A gardener has shared a natural hack to stop slugs and snails from eating plants, using a leftover kitchen ingredient that also nourishes the soil.

Adam Kirtland, who posts on TikTok as ‘The View from the Potting Bench’, recommends adding egg shells to the soil to prevent slugs from crawling up to plants. He said: “Crush and scatter them around your plants to deter slugs and snails”.

Kirtland advises baking the shells first to “make them extra crispy”.

Natural alternative to pesticides

The hack offers a natural alternative to chemical pesticides, which can be dangerous for other wildlife. Gastropods are also an important part of the natural environment, so it is better to discourage them than to kill them.

The method uses leftovers already available at home, with no nasty chemicals involved.

Extra calcium for healthier plants

The shells do more than deter pests. Kirtland explained: “Over time, they will rot away and add extra calcium back into your soil”.

This added calcium nourishes plants, helping them grow stronger and healthier throughout the year.
