Algae and moss can accumulate on patios and driveways, making surfaces look dirty and slippery. Toolstation recommends regular cleaning to prevent hazards and maintain appearance. The company states: 'There are several methods for patio cleaning and these range from a light wash using household products through to a more intensive clean using a pressure washer, and then finishing it off with a patio sealant.' Depending on weather and usage, different techniques can be used throughout the year.
Soapy Water Method
For lightly soiled patios, a simple soapy water wash is effective. Toolstation advises: 'If your patio has minimal dirt, a light wash of your patio tiles should suffice in removing most of the grime.' During spring and summer, weekly cleaning is recommended. First, sweep away leaves and loose debris. Then mix warm water with washing-up liquid and apply directly to slabs. Scrub with a stiff-bristled brush or broom, then rinse with fresh water to reveal clean tiles.
White Vinegar Solution
For tough stains and moss, white vinegar offers an eco-friendly alternative. The specialists explain: 'If you're looking for an eco-friendly way of removing tough, stubborn stains from your patio tiles, then white vinegar could be just the answer. The acidity of vinegar is perfect for breaking down hard-to-remove stains, and even moss, making it a great patio cleaning solution.' Remove garden furniture before starting. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Apply generously to stains and let sit for 30 minutes. Scrub with a firm-bristled brush to lift stains, then rinse with clean water and allow to dry.
