Remove Limescale from Kettles with 2 Cheap Ingredients

Limescale, a common household nuisance in the UK, can be effectively eliminated from kettles using just two inexpensive ingredients: white vinegar and water. Cleaning enthusiast and author Lynsey, who has appeared on ITV's This Morning and Good Morning Britain, shared her simple method in a social media video.

The Two-Ingredient Solution

In the video, Lynsey filled her pink kettle to the quarter mark with a mixture of white vinegar and water, following the general recommendation of one part white vinegar to three parts water. She left the solution to sit for about 30 minutes. For kettles with a limescale-plagued spout, she suggested soaking a piece of kitchen roll in white vinegar and wrapping it around the spout during the process.

After 30 minutes, she boiled the kettle, emptied it, and rinsed thoroughly with fresh water. The result, as shown in a before-and-after shot, was a kettle free of unsightly white limescale patches.

Why Vinegar Works

Vinegar is an affordable, natural, and highly effective solution for dissolving limescale. As limescale is an alkaline mineral deposit, the mild acid in white vinegar breaks it down on contact. This makes it ideal for cleaning taps, showerheads, kettles, and toilet bowls without harsh chemicals. For stubborn build-up, warming the vinegar slightly before use can boost its cleaning power.

Limescale buildup, common in hard water areas due to high concentrations of dissolved calcium and magnesium, can cause reduced water flow, leaks, damage to kettle heating elements, and reduced dishwasher performance if left untreated.
