A simple homemade fertiliser made from banana peels can help peace lilies bloom for years, according to an enthusiastic houseplant fan who shared the tip on the Gardening Hints and Tips Facebook page. The anonymous user wrote: "I've always struggled to get my peace lilies looking good, but bananas make them bloom for years."
How to Make the Banana Peel Fertiliser
The method involves chopping a banana peel and soaking it in warm water for a few days. The user advised: "Once I've eaten a banana or given it to my dog, I'll chop the peel and soak it in some warm water. After a few days, pour sparingly on your plants." The resulting liquid should be diluted to avoid overwhelming the plant with nutrients.
Peace lilies are a popular houseplant in the UK, prized for their striking white spathes and glossy green leaves. While they are easy to care for, feeding them just once a month during the spring and summer growing season can promote repeat flowering. Overfeeding can cause harm, so moderation is key.
Nutrients Released by Banana Peels
Soaking banana peels in water releases essential nutrients including potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium, all of which benefit peace lilies. The same method works for outdoor plants such as tomatoes, bell peppers, roses, and hydrangeas. When adding a new plant to the garden, placing several banana peels beneath the compost or spreading them on the soil surface can also help deter pests like slugs, which dislike rough surfaces.
The Facebook post attracted numerous responses from fellow houseplant enthusiasts. Susan Dyre commented: "Heard lots about this, so I gave it a go. I only use it now and again, and then a proper feed in between, but it's fantastic." Rose Danyel added: "All houseplants love this, not just peace lilies, but be careful not to overwater."
Expert Advice on Feeding Peace Lilies
While the banana peel method is popular, experts caution against overfeeding. Peace lilies are not demanding plants, and excessive fertiliser can cause damage. The homemade feed should be used sparingly, alternating with proper plant food if desired. With the right care, peace lilies can bloom for years, adding beauty to any home.
