Summer is often associated with sunshine, but July can bring heavy rainfall and high humidity, creating ideal conditions for mould. While mould is commonly seen as a winter issue, it only needs warmth and moisture to thrive. In winter, moisture from drying laundry indoors fuels mould; in summer, steam from showers and baths settles on walls, tiles, and surfaces. Normally, this water evaporates, but July's humid weather—caused by heavy rainfall after hot spells—keeps bathrooms wet for longer, preventing proper airing out.

Many popular houseplants are tropical species that naturally grow on rainforest floors, where dense canopy blocks rain but the air remains humid. For a low-maintenance option, the snake plant is ideal. It can go weeks without watering, requires little sunlight, and thrives on bathroom humidity. If aesthetics matter, a peace lily offers elegant white flowers and prefers moist soil, making it a common bathroom choice. Orchids also help control mould; their roots need consistent warmth, and they add colour. Other effective plants include ferns, aloe vera, and English ivy, all of which enjoy humid environments.
