Dishwashers, despite their role in cleaning dishes, require regular maintenance to prevent unpleasant odors. A build-up of food residue, grease, soap scum, bacteria, and mould can cause musty smells. Other factors include clogged filters or drains, and residue hidden in seals.
Natural Solution from the Fridge
Cleaning guru Chantel Mila, known as Mama Mila on TikTok, shared a simple natural remedy in a May video. She recommends using lemons to eliminate dishwasher odors. The citric acid in lemons naturally cuts through grease, dissolves limescale, deodorizes the machine, and leaves a fresh scent.
To apply this hack, cut up a lemon and place the pieces in the top dishwasher rack. Run a normal cycle with your usual detergent and dishes. The lemon works during the wash to break down residues and neutralize smells.
Expert Tips and Warnings
Nicki Rodriguez of Essex House Dolly told Ideal Home: "Adding lemon will help to cut grease and limescale naturally. It’ll also leave the dishwasher smelling fresh." However, she warns to remove lemon seeds first, as they can clog the dishwasher's filter. Ideal Home also notes that the lemon alone won't remove leftover food scraps; proper pre-rinsing is still advisable.
For best results, combine this lemon hack with regular cleaning of the filter and seals to prevent odor recurrence.
