Keep Cucumbers Fresh for Two Weeks with a Metal Spoon

Cucumbers can stay fresh for up to two weeks longer when stored with a simple metal spoon, according to culinary expert Marzia, creator of Little Spice Jar. The trick involves placing cucumbers in a sealed container with a metal spoon and a paper towel, then storing on the upper or middle shelf of the fridge.

Why Cucumbers Spoil Quickly

Many people store cucumbers in the fridge, but temperatures below 10°C cause chilling damage, leading to bruising, shrivelling, and sliminess. Cucumbers are sensitive to cold and break down when exposed to such conditions. Additionally, tomatoes release ethylene gas, which accelerates ripening and spoilage in nearby produce.

The Metal Spoon Hack

Marzia explained: "Add [cucumbers] to a glass or plastic container with a tight-fitting lid. Add a metal spoon to the same container. Snap the lid on the container and place it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks." The metal spoon helps maintain consistent temperatures around the cucumbers, preventing cold spots that cause damage. Including a paper towel absorbs excess moisture, further extending freshness.

Best Storage Practices

Place the container on the upper or middle shelf of the fridge, where temperatures are warmest. Avoid the back of the fridge or near the freezer vent, as extreme cold can cause chilling injuries. Also, keep cucumbers away from tomatoes to prevent ethylene gas exposure.

By spending just a couple of minutes on proper storage, cucumbers can remain crisp and fresh for up to two weeks longer than usual, reducing food waste.
