Tomatoes are a popular and rewarding crop to grow from scratch, and summer is the best time to see them thrive. June marks the beginning of tomato harvest season, and with July approaching, plants should be gearing up for an abundant yield. However, gardening expert and TikTok creator Ish warns that a simple mistake could be sabotaging your harvest.
The Sideshoot Problem
In a recent video, Ish explained that if tomato plants are thriving but not producing fruit, gardeners may be overlooking excess sideshoots. These stems divert energy away from fruit development. Ish said: "These sideshoots want to grow and grow and grow, which is fantastic, but it's taking all the nutrients for growing and not focusing on growing any tomatoes."
The fix is simple: pinch off any sideshoots with your fingertips or secateurs. This redirects nutrients back to the tomatoes, encouraging fruit growth.
Use the Correct Feed
Another common mistake is using the wrong fertilizer. Ish recommends a dedicated tomato feed, rich in potassium and phosphorus, applied every one to two weeks during summer. Mix one capful with four to five litres of water and apply directly to the compost. This feed also works for other fruits and vegetables.
Watering Consistency
Proper watering is crucial. Keep soil consistently moist during summer, avoiding cycles of wet to dry, which stress the plant and hinder fruit production. Inconsistent watering can also cause tomatoes to split. By addressing these three factors—sideshoots, feed, and watering—gardeners can ensure a bountiful tomato harvest.
