Forecasts indicate that the UK could face another heatwave in early July, with temperatures potentially reaching 41C — which would surpass the previous record of 40.3C set in July 2022. As temperatures rise, gardeners are urged to take immediate action to protect their plants.
Key Task: Move Young Plants to Shade
Jude Allen, Head Grower at Wild Farm in Hertfordshire, emphasizes that the most critical step before the heatwave is to relocate young plants and seedlings from greenhouses or polytunnels into shaded areas. This simple move can significantly improve their chances of survival during extreme heat.
Create Shade and Water Wisely
Allen also recommends creating shade using cloth or even a bed sheet, ensuring adequate airflow and no direct contact with plants. Watering should be done early in the morning to allow absorption before the heat peaks; evening watering is acceptable, but watering during the hottest part of the day should be avoided as moisture evaporates immediately.
Mulch to Retain Moisture
Mulching with grass clippings, straw, or homemade compost helps retain soil moisture. However, Allen advises against using woodchips as they can strip nitrogen from the soil.
